La Luna s'inspire de l'enfance de Enrico Casarosa, sur la mer de Genoa (Italie), où son père et son grand-père ne se parlaient que très peu car ne se supportaient pas l'un l'autre. Le réalisateur décida d'abord de ne pas faire de bouches aux personnages afin de faciliter l'animation. Ce fut au contraire plus compliqué pour les animateurs qui devaient travaillés ce manque par la barbe du père et du grand-père. L'arrière-plan du court n'est pas fait en image de synthèses mais en pastel. Casarosa s'est inspiré du travail de Miyazaki et du film The Distance of the Moon de Italo Calvino.".
