Rranscript Video:

  • 0:00 | – I am more than happy
  • 0:01 | to leave you here to die of your wounds,
  • 0:04 | but there is a way off this planet
  • 0:06 | and to do it, it’s gonna take both of us.
  • 0:09 | – So welcome to episode 11,
    this one’s called “Etherea,”
  • 0:13 | it was directed by Aprill Winney,
  • 0:16 | who’s a first-time director for us,
  • 0:18 | really, really excited about her
  • 0:21 | and what she’s done with this one
  • 0:22 | and written by Mr. Jeffrey
    Vlaming back again.
  • 0:27 | Jeff, how are you bud?
  • 0:28 | – I’m doing great, I’m very
    excited about this episode.
  • 0:31 | This has been a fantastic season,
  • 0:33 | but this is gonna be a great episode.
  • 0:34 | – Yeah, this one’s really
    special, really different
  • 0:38 | and you know, it was conceived
    really from the beginning
  • 0:41 | as the sort of stand
    alone story than it is.
  • 0:44 | – He’s alive.
  • 0:45 | – Episode 7.11 takes us
    to yet another new planet,
  • 0:49 | Etherea, the episode’s name.
  • 0:51 | (groaning)
  • 0:55 | It’s here that our characters
    discover some of the beliefs
  • 0:59 | and the underpinnings,
    that form the foundation
  • 1:02 | of this weird, religious,
    militaristic society in Bardo.
  • 1:06 | – You know I suffer for
all my kind, he saved us.
  • 1:10 | – No one is coming to save us.
  • 1:12 | – Cadogan himself visited Etherea
  • 1:15 | on his relentless
    pursuit of transcendence,
  • 1:17 | so it’s sort of bringing
    everything together.
  • 1:20 | – This is your shepherd?
    – I told you,
  • 1:22 | this guy is a cult leader.
  • 1:25 | I saw a video of him preaching
on Earth, a fraud, a con man.
  • 1:30 | – He predicted the Earth’s end
  • 1:33 | and brought his people
    safely across the stars.
  • 1:36 | – To this point, you’re
    sort of chalking Cadogan up
  • 1:38 | to being this sort of raving madman
  • 1:41 | and in fact, this episode,
  • 1:43 | it makes you sort of
    believe somewhat in Cadogan,
  • 1:47 | which is, you know, sort of unexpected.
  • 1:49 | – We’re on a pilgrimage of our own.
  • 1:52 | – You may be, I’m headed for the exit.
  • 1:56 | – But the shepherd guides us both.
  • 1:59 | – In my sort of head canon,
  • 2:00 | I’m not sure we ever
    say overtly in the show,
  • 2:04 | that every planet in the solar system,
  • 2:07 | rather every planet in the universe,
  • 2:09 | that is potentially life-sustaining
  • 2:15 | probably has a stone on it
  • 2:17 | and you know, at some point,
  • 2:20 | who knows where the journey took Cadogan.
  • 2:24 | – I believe in what I can prove.
  • 2:27 | – Do you love your family, your friends?
  • 2:31 | – What kind of stupid question
is that, you know I do.
  • 2:34 | – Prove it.
  • 2:35 | – What’s kind of cool
    about this episode for me
  • 2:37 | is that in part, it was inspired
    by an experience of mine.
  • 2:42 | I was in Tucson, Arizona with my brother,
  • 2:43 | we were gonna climb this mountain range,
  • 2:45 | just north of the city and we
    started out at first light,
  • 2:49 | we climbed and we climbed
and by the end of the day,
  • 2:52 | worn out, exhausted,
    sweating, we reached the top
  • 2:55 | only to see that we had only climbed
  • 2:57 | this small mountain range
    and that the actual range
  • 2:59 | we thought we were climbing
    was still ahead of us
  • 3:01 | and of course completely unattainable.
  • 3:04 | And I remember you, Jason said,
  • 3:07 | “That is the most apt metaphor
    for the creative process,”
  • 3:12 | but like for life.
  • 3:14 | – My people, that is what is real.
  • 3:16 | – And yet there’s still
    something missing inside you.
  • 3:20 | Death and despair hover
    around you like a shroud.
  • 3:24 | – When you really are making
    some important, I think,
  • 3:28 | statements with this one and
    what about those statements,
  • 3:31 | that I believe to be a life lesson,
  • 3:33 | that everybody needs to realize
  • 3:35 | is that there is no destination, you know,
  • 3:38 | it’s all about the journey
  • 3:40 | and those destination
    points are very fleeting.
  • 3:43 | When you achieve something,
    it’s great for a moment,
  • 3:47 | but then you have to, you know, keep going
  • 3:49 | and if you aren’t enjoying the day to day,
  • 3:52 | if you aren’t enjoying the climb,
  • 3:55 | to use the metaphor of this,
  • 3:57 | then you know, you’re gonna be miserable,
  • 3:59 | because those moments that do
    finally come true for people,
  • 4:03 | you sell a script, you
    get a show picked up,
  • 4:05 | whatever the case may be,
    it’s great in the moment,
  • 4:09 | trust me, but it doesn’t
    solve your problems.
  • 4:12 | – Exactly.
  • 4:13 | – So Jeff, thank you, bud
    really for everything.
  • 4:16 | You’ve been a great presence in the room,
  • 4:18 | a calming influence, your
    writing’s always beautiful,
  • 4:21 | especially when you’re
    really connected to the story
  • 4:24 | like you were in this one, but
    anyway, it’s been a pleasure.
  • 4:27 | – Absolutely, thank you, Jason.
  • 4:29 | – From the ashes we will rise.
  • 4:33 | From the ashes we will rise.
