Rranscript Video:
0:01 | (dramatic orchestral music)
0:02 | – What are you?
0:03 | – Hey, look, it’s me, Joel McHale,
0:05 | and a bunch of people from the cast of “Stargirl.”
0:08 | How’s it going, guys?
0:09 | – Hi, Joel.
0:10 | Hey, Amy, hey, Brec.
0:11 | – Hi.
0:12 | – So, obviously, you guys must have,
0:14 | you’ve seen, the reception of the show is pretty tremendous.
0:18 | – I personally was really excited to work on it.
0:20 | It just seemed like such a masterpiece,
0:22 | and such a symphony of characters, and storylines,
0:25 | and a larger than life show,
0:27 | but really based in a family in a small town,
0:31 | and something that you could grasp.
0:32 | It wasn’t just superheroes.
0:34 | It had really great storylines that I liked.
0:36 | (dramatic orchestral music)
0:42 | – I’m Stargirl.
0:43 | – Brec, I’m gonna start with you.
0:44 | You got this role when you were 18.
0:46 | What was it like working with these guys,
0:48 | with Luke and Amy?
0:49 | – An honor, so cool.
0:51 | I have to give props to both of them.
0:53 | Like, so many times, working with actors,
0:55 | it’s like, the camera’s on them, they’ll give it their all,
0:58 | but as soon as the coverage is turned,
0:59 | and the camera’s not on them,
1:00 | they just stop giving you anything.
1:03 | You have nothing to work off of.
1:05 | And both of them never did that.
1:07 | I feel like Luke, half the time,
1:09 | was almost pushing himself more when it was on me
1:12 | because he wanted to give me things to work off of.
1:14 | (S.T.R.I.P.E. whirs)
1:17 | What is that thing?
1:19 | – [Pat] It’s a prototype.
1:20 | – [Courtney] You built it?
1:21 | – Outta old car parts.
1:23 | – I knew the show was serious
1:24 | when I saw your robot, Luke.
1:26 | I went, oh, I was telling Geoff,
1:28 | I was like, this is not an inexpensively made show.
1:32 | – That’s what happened to me too.
1:34 | Like, Brec and I saw it on the same day.
1:36 | That was the first day I met Brec,
1:38 | but it’s like, I guess,
1:39 | in the back of my mind, I’m always prepared
1:41 | for some kind of Ed Wood thing
1:43 | where it’s like, a crew gotta pull him on a piece of rope,
1:47 | moving, you know, like, a big
1:49 | tinfoil-covered arm or something,
1:51 | but we went out to this effects house,
1:55 | and saw the robot, and realized, like,
1:58 | wow, this is the real thing.
2:00 | – My favorite was scenes with S.T.R.I.P.E.
2:02 | Is this thing even safe?
2:04 | ‘Cause sometimes, it was a practical robot,
2:06 | but most of the time,
2:08 | it was just a big 16-foot tall stick
2:09 | with this cardboard cutout S.T.R.I.P.E. head
2:12 | and they’re like, okay, so he lands next to you,
2:15 | and the whole ground is shaking.
2:16 | I’m like, oh, is it now?
2:18 | Okay, good to know.
2:20 | – Oh my god, what happened?
2:22 | – Oh, I fell down the basement stairs.
2:24 | – What?
2:25 | – It was way larger than I ever expected,
2:29 | and I was so impressed.
2:30 | The stunt coordinators and everyone
2:32 | who did the stunts were just so talented.
2:35 | I only got a couple fight scenes
2:37 | in the season, but boy, was it fun.
2:40 | – I thought we were gonna stop moving around
2:41 | once you hooked up with Barbara.
2:43 | – We’re not hooked up, Mike.
2:44 | – Fine, what do you want me to say, shacked up?
2:47 | – Trae, he was never at a loss for words.
2:50 | – That’s true.
2:51 | – How old was he?
2:52 | – Like a 40-year-old man stuffed into a 13–
2:55 | – I think he was 13 when we did it.
2:57 | – I call it “Life in Hollywood.”
3:00 | – But my favorite thing is, he’s from Georgia,
3:03 | but he sounds like he’s from the middle of New York,
3:05 | and I’m like, you’re from Georgia,
3:06 | where is this accent coming from?
3:08 | – No, yeah, his family’s from Long Island.
3:10 | – Italian.
3:14 | (man grunts)
3:16 | – How did it happen for you, Joel?
3:17 | How did the part come down the line for you?
3:20 | – Believe me, I was thrilled
3:21 | just to be, I’m not kidding, dressed up as a superhero.
3:25 | The eight-year-old me was just, like,
3:26 | looking in the mirror, going like.
3:28 | (people laugh)
3:30 | – I will say, that was a well-fitting suit.
3:34 | (Brec laughs)
3:35 | I just remember you getting into the car,
3:37 | where you’d kind of have to, like, fall into the car
3:40 | like an old person ’cause the thing was so tight,
3:44 | you couldn’t, like, bend over.
3:45 | – When I sat down in it, I had to pull on the neck
3:50 | ’cause it was just very subtly choking me.
3:52 | – I really thought you were method
3:54 | ’cause they’d yell cut, but you’d still be like (groans)
3:59 | – No.
4:01 | – Hi-ya.
4:02 | (grunts)
4:03 | – Starman.
4:04 | (Starman grunts)
4:05 | – I told you to wait in the car.
4:07 | Next week is your birthday there, Ms. Brec Bassinger.
4:13 | – What a week you’re gonna have.
4:14 | Show premiering, 21st birthday.
4:17 | What else can you fit in there?
4:18 | – All in quarantine.
4:20 | Not how I expected it.
4:22 | – Oh, gosh. – You will definitely
4:23 | never forget it, and it’s pretty cool.
4:26 | I mean, the pandemic is not cool at all,
4:29 | but you guys, congratulations.
4:32 | Happy birthday, Brec.
4:34 | Show premiers this Tuesday, nine o’clock, 8:00 central,
4:37 | on CW, on the CW, and then the episode will appear
4:43 | on the streaming app, on CW streaming app, the next day,
4:46 | so you have no excuse not to watch it.
4:49 | – Thanks, Joel, thanks for doing this,
4:50 | and Brec, Amy, see you guys.
4:53 | – Thanks, you guys. – Great to see you.
4:55 | – (chuckles) Awesome.
