Rranscript Video:
0:00 | – [Disciple] On your feet.
0:01 | – Let’s go. – Move!
0:02 | – So Welcome to Bardo, episode five of season seven.
0:06 | This was written by Drew Lindo,
0:09 | who’s joining us today, hi, Drew.
0:10 | – Hi, Jason, how you doing?
0:12 | – This was directed by Ian Samoil, our longtime first AD
0:15 | and a wonderful director in his own right.
0:18 | I think this is maybe his fifth or sixth episode
0:20 | that he’s done of the show.
0:22 | – [Machine Operator] Hello, Octavia.
0:23 | (Octavia gasps) I’m gonna start
0:25 | by asking you a few baseline questions.
0:27 | – Drew, this is a crazy episode.
0:29 | This is the episode that will melt the noodle.
0:33 | – Yeah, it’s sort of a Mobius strip of two stories
0:36 | happening in the same space at different times
0:38 | and we’re sort of wrapping up the end
0:40 | of Octavia’s off-screen story from season six.
0:44 | In season six we saw her disappear into the anomaly
0:47 | for a short time and come back
0:49 | having no memory of what happened, and slowly
0:51 | here in season seven we’ve been sort of going back
0:53 | and retroactively showing what transpired
0:56 | that led to the events of Hope returning
0:58 | and recognizing Octavia and Octavia’s history
1:01 | with Diyoza, so this is the episode where Echo’s team
1:04 | goes in to try to find Octavia and Bellamy
1:07 | and we will also get to see, parallel to that,
1:10 | what happened when Octavia and Diyoza were taken over
1:13 | to Bardo for the first time.
1:14 | – [Diyoza] Octavia, don’t tell them anything!
1:17 | – You know, obviously for the first four episodes
1:19 | we’ve been setting up this new world
1:22 | that we call Bardo that we’re heading towards,
1:24 | that we go to for the first time in this episode
1:26 | and Marie Avgeropoulos, Octavia,
1:29 | has an amazing, as you’ll see soon enough, sort of run
1:34 | through Bardo in the teaser
1:36 | and it really is a totally new environment for us.
1:40 | It’s unlike any planet or moon that we’ve been on before.
1:43 | – Yeah, this is our first glimpse at this culture
1:46 | and this world that we haven’t really seen up close
1:48 | and we see a lot of it through Octavia’s eyes
1:50 | in this flashback story that again is filling the gaps.
1:53 | – [Disciple] Welcome to Bardo.
1:54 | – But we’re also getting a glimpse
1:55 | of just how formidable the Disciples are,
1:58 | their technology and their society,
2:00 | it is very different and very rigid
2:03 | and clearly they are believers in a cause
2:06 | that we have yet to fully understand.
2:08 | Our characters are really inside the belly of the beast
2:11 | this episode, both in the past and in the present.
2:13 | – In the light of the Shepherd, we will not lose.
2:18 | (crowd cheering)
2:20 | – So we meet Anders, who we’ve talked quite a lot about
2:22 | this season and he’s played by Neal McDonough
2:26 | in an amazing, sort of very different again for our show,
2:31 | kind of role and performance.
2:33 | – For all mankind! (crowd cheering)
2:36 | – And we begin to unpack how they got here, who they are,
2:40 | and obviously things don’t quite add up.
2:42 | – On behalf of the faithful, I demand
2:44 | the release of Russell Prime.
2:45 | – Nobody knows yet that Russell is no longer Russell
2:48 | and that Sheidheda is inhabiting the body,
2:50 | having wiped Russell’s consciousness clean.
2:53 | So far he’s been using these followers on Sanctum
2:56 | as insurance to keep himself alive
2:58 | ’cause they’ll riot if anything happens to him.
3:00 | – How does it feel to know they’re willing
3:01 | to die for your freedom? – Awful.
3:03 | – But now we see in this episode
3:05 | what happens when the flock begin to try
3:07 | to come up with clever plans of their own.
3:09 | – For the glory and the grace of the Primes!
3:12 | – And instead are actually going to make everything
3:14 | (woman screaming) much more volatile
3:15 | in Sanctum, including Russ-heda’s own safety and security
3:19 | so Murphy and Indra will have to step up a little bit.
3:22 | – You put them up to this.
3:23 | – Why would I tell my followers to kill themselves?
3:27 | – Another great performance from J.R. Bourne.
3:29 | – Watching J.R. Bourne play characters within characters,
3:32 | playing Sheidheda impersonating Russell,
3:34 | it’s really an amazing performance.
3:36 | – We can’t just let them burn themselves alive.
3:38 | – We won’t, Russell isn’t the only Prime in Sanctum.
3:40 | – Murphy, he wanted to be a god last season
3:42 | and this season is really about him
3:44 | having to grapple with the consequences of that.
3:46 | He’s now responsible for these people he doesn’t really know
3:49 | or doesn’t really care about that much.
3:51 | So now he’s forced to try to maybe save their lives.
3:53 | – I got it.
3:54 | – Yeah, and I think it’s fascinating to see that
3:56 | beginning to work its way into his heart, too, you know?
3:59 | As Murphy begins to actually care,
4:02 | I think it surprises him most of all
4:05 | and it’s a really interesting arc
4:07 | that this episode definitely sort of takes a big step in.
4:10 | – The others better come back soon
4:11 | because I am getting tired of being the hero.
4:14 | (brooding techno music)
