Get your pajamas ready zoomers, it’s time to see how the millennials did it in their 20s. There is nothing we don’t already know from other chaotic besties-take-city shows of the past, but maybe we would actually listen to what this one has to say about friendship before boys. It’s not likely, but maybe. Here is everything you need to know about BBC One’s drama series, Everything I Know About Love.
Dolly Alderton’s memoir-turned-series, Everything I Know About Love, is the story of two best friends, Maggie and Birdy, stumbling their way through London in 2012 while sharing an apartment with two other girls, and tripping over men, empty wallets, embarrassing work costumes, and each other. Naturally, one of the girls, Maggie, is a crazy, self-absorbed and tall tale-telling (pardon my alliteration) half of the friendship, who doesn’t appreciate her reserved, always-available other half, Birdy, until Birdy finds a guy.
Birdy’s new guy, Nathan (dark-haired, strong-jawed, and blue-green-eyed obviously, because this show is not cliche at all), takes priority over Maggie. This change in circumstances does not sit well with Maggie, especially since she was the one who matched them. We also see Maggie in a destructive and toxic relationship with Street Baxter, a pathetic excuse for a man and a musician.
In this comedy-drama series, we see the girls’ friendship take a tumble down a rough path of meltdowns, envy, and hideously low self-esteem that’s almost too exhausting to watch. You are sure to find a bit of yourself in this show. After all, we can all agree that our 20s were/are/will be absolutely insane, and best friends simply have to fight. Crazy 20s are a rite of passage into adulthood, and best friends that don’t disagree are just passing through each other’s lives.
Everything I Know About Love was created by Dolly Alderton, the author of the novel the show is partially based on. The comedy series premiered on June 7, 2022, in the UK, with all seven episodes dropping on BBC One. Everything I Know About Love was later released in the US on August 25, 2022, with all seven episodes appearing on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming platform. The drama series was filmed in London and Manchester under the Working Title Television and Universal International Studios production companies.
Everything I Know About Love was directed by China Moo-Young from episodes 1 to 4, while episodes 5, 6, and 7 were directed by Julia Ford. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Jo McClellan, and Syrian Fletcher-Jones executive-produced the television series with Simon Maloney as a producer. Everything I Know About Love is distributed by NBCUniversal Television Distribution.
Despite its cliché and awkward story arch, and the exhausting moments at the beginning, where Maggie and Birdy seemed to be trying to convince us they are best friends by stating excessively “deep” facts about one another that no one asked for, Everything I Know About Love has some pretty good ratings. Some people do love the nostalgic value the drama series has for being similar to popular drama series like Sex and The City. I don’t know what all that is about since I could barely get through the season myself, which is definitely not the same feeling I have about Sex and the City.
But here we are, and the show has better ratings than I would give. Everything I Know About You has a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb, 73/100 on Metacritic, and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can definitely stream this show with your friends on a girls’ or guys’ night out, and during sleepovers, if you are into awkward flashbacks and forced lines.
Everything I Know About Love is available on BBC One for those in the UK, and on Peacock for those in the US. People in other countries can watch the show on these streaming platforms using a VPN.
