Kingdom is a South Korean period thriller. The television series is a perfect blend of all sorts of elements like blood, terror, political intrigue, mystery, and horror. The show is based on the webtoon series “The Kingdom of the Gods”. It is Netflix’s first original Korean series. ‘
Kingdom Plot
The storyline is set in a period during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty, taking place three years post the Imjin War. The first season focuses on the story of Crown Prince Lee Chang and his subordinates who face this extraordinary and unimaginable plague causing the resurrection of the dead while they investigate this rising political conspiracy and these circulating rumors about the death of the King of Joseon. Throughout this turmoil of deaths and utter chaos, Chang meets allies and together they assemble to make a stand in Sangju before the plague continues to spread further but later on realize the plague has already developed itself to it.
The second season also continues to show Lee Chang’s effortless struggle and pains he continues to endure to save his people and be the rightful ruler to save them from this continuously spreading plague and protect his dynasty from the plans and attacks of the powerful and cunning Haewon Cho who is keeping a sinful secret to himself too.
Kingdom: Ashin of the North is set before the timeline of the first season of Kingdom which focuses on the past stories and events of Ashin, the mysterious heir to the Northern Seongjeoyain tribe village and how the unnatural resurrection plant originated which later on leads to the ultimate massacre and chaos in the kingdom of Joseon.
Netflix has not given any official word on the renewal of the show yet. The first two seasons were quite fast in releasing so fans were expecting Season 3 around 2021 but that might have been delayed owing to COVID-19 conditions. As of now still, there has been no official word if Kingdom has been renewed or cancelled but considering the story of the special episode “Kingdom: Ashin in the North” it may act as a bridge to fill in the information for events between season 2 and a potential season 3.
The show is also quite a global hit and the series director also indirectly has hinted at the continuity of the show so we can more or less confirm that Kingdom Season 3 is happening and may hit the screen hopefully by the end of 2022.
Kingdom is available to stream in its entirety on Netflix.
